THE LESSONS OF LIFE - OGUNTOLA ADELOWO

I feared people’s opinions until I discovered that they would have opinions about me anyway
I feared rejection until I learnt to have faith in myself
I feared pain until I learnt that it is necessary for growth
I feared ridicule until I learnt to laugh at myself
I feared changes until I saw that even the beautiful butterfly evolved from the caterpillar
In my recent adventure of what life brings, even in my darkest world, I feel you cannot be Mr. Right at all time but I am also certain I cannot always be wrong because dreams “nurture” and dreams “torture”.
WHAT A LIFE!

DEVELOPING YOUR ENTREPRENEURSHIP POTENTIALS - OGUNTOLA ADELOWO

Entrepreneurs are individuals who are continually looking for opportunities to start or grow their own business. These are the kind of people who prefer to be part of those that determines the economic forces of the country wherein they reside.
Individuals are attracted to entrepreneurship by a number of powerful incentives such as profit, independence and a satisfying way of life. In general, there are four (4) ways to becoming an entrepreneur and these are:
Entering a family business
Opening a franchised business
Buying an existing business/Investing in various existing businesses
Starting a new business
THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILL
We will begin to ask the question (i) what skills do I need as an entrepreneur? (ii) What makes someone a successful entrepreneur?
It certainly helps to have strong technology skills or expertise in a key area but these are not defining characteristics of entrepreneurship. Instead, the key qualities are traits such as; creativity, the ability to keep going in the face of hardship and the social skills needed to build great teams.
DEFINING ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Some experts have tried to define entrepreneurs as people who are willing to take risks that other people are not ready to take. Some others defined entrepreneurs as people who want to start and build successful businesses. Thinking about the first definition, being an entrepreneur does not necessarily involve starting your own business as many people who do not work for themselves are recognized as entrepreneurs within their organizations. Regardless of the two definitions, one thing is certain; becoming a successful entrepreneur is not easy.
So we ask, how does one person successfully take advantage of an opportunity while another equally knowledgeable person does not? Though, many studies have gone over this subject there is an affirmative answer. It is evident that successful entrepreneurs seem to have certain traits in common. In this paper, four traits will be considered as follows:
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
To be an entrepreneur, we need to ask examine our personal characteristics, values and beliefs. The biggest question here is, do I have the mindset that is typical of successful entrepreneurs? This is more a question of behavioural pattern and innate values that define the personality of a human.
The mindset typical of successful entrepreneurs entails OPTIMISM, VISION, INITIATIVE, DESIRE FOR CONTROL, DRIVE AND PERSISTENCE, RISK TOLERANCE and RESILIENCE.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
As a successful entrepreneur, you will have to work closely with people. This is where it is critical to be able to build great relationships with your team, customers, suppliers, shareholders, investors and more.
The skills needed here will include LEADERSHIP AND MOTIVATION, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, GOOD LISTENING ABILITIES, EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN PERSONAL RELATIONS, NEGOTIATION and ETHICS.
CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING SKILLS
As a good entrepreneur, you will need to always come up with fresh ideas and make good decisions about opportunities and potential projects. Most people are not born creative but creativity is a skill that can be developed if there is persistent investment of time and skills. A good entrepreneur will be able to THINK CREATIVELY, SOLVE PROBLEMS and RECOGNIZE OPPORTUNITIES.

PRACTICAL SKILLS
Practical skills and knowledge are also needed to produce goods or services effectively and run a business. These skills include GOAL SETTING, PLANNING AND ORGANIZING and DECISION MAKING.
Now that we have identified all the skills required to be a successful entrepreneur, the question becomes, how do we fuse them all together into a successful entrepreneurship move? The following points will answer this question.
START A SMALL BUSINESS: Entrepreneurship cannot be fully learnt within the confines of a school; rather, it is better learnt on the job because the lessons therein are practical lessons. To develop these skills quickly, you need to start a small business and learn on the job.
READ BUSINESS, INDUSTRIAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL MAGAZINES
READ BOOKS ON BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
ATTEND SEMINARS
READ AUTOBIOGRAPHIES AND BIOGRAPHIES OF SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS
JOIN ORGANIZATIONS
NETWORK WITH OTHER ENTREPRENEURS
FIND A MENTOR

In conclusion, I will always advise entrepreneurs to use every opportunity they have to learn something new and improve their skills.

WILL THE PROPHECY COME TO PASS? - OSUN GO!

Sometimes in the year 2005, some funny elements in Monatan area of Ibadan Oyo State named a bus stop ‘Osun go’ meaning ‘Osun is stupid’ (that will be the direct translation) or more carefully explained, ’Osun people are stupid’ (Can be so explained because Osun is a state that has people as its constituting elements and cannot be referred to without making reference to the people that makes up the state, ta ba pe ori aja, a pe ori ikoko ta fi se e).
You will ask me, why will anybody go ahead and do anything so inciting? The reason for their actions was one mighty structure that was under construction in their neighbourhood which belonged to the then Secretary to the State Government. In their limited thinking, they believed for a Secretary to the State Government to be building such a wonderful structure, that administration must have milked the state dry. They were obviously oblivious of the fact that a combination of entrepreneurial acumen and will power can move mountains. As was later stated by the Managing Director of Wema Bank Plc at the launch of the Golden Tulips Owu Crown Hotel, Monatan Ibadan (the building in question), Wema Bank was involved from the beginning to the end, as financiers. Obviously, Osun was not stupid in that era. Osun o go laye Olagunsoye, dipo bee, Osun gbon.
However, we cannot completely say those unscrupulous elements are crazy, Infact, the costly joke of that time, is now quickly unfolding as a prophecy (omi tuntun ti ru, eja buruku ti wo inu e). When on November 26, 2010 the controversial Appeal Court judgement brought in Ogbeni as the Governor of Osun State, people rolled out drums in certain quarters to celebrate ‘Oranmiyan’ the one they believed will deliver them from their self-induced bondage (a o m’erin j’Oba, eweku ewele). He came in too with so much boasts, promises and condemnations of those who had laboured tirelessly before him.
Two years and nine months down the line, Osun can only boast of projects flag-off, uncompleted projects and semi-completed projects (completion of engineering construction must really be a time-wasting venture oh). Where are the O’School buildings? The ultra-modern infrastructure in the health sector nko? Where are the O’RAMP roads? What of O’FISH? O’BEEF nko? Where is O’TOURS? O’MEDIATION nko? If we cannot have our O’GOODIES, God please deliver O’DABO to Ogbeni and grant him a portion in O’PRISON if You sentence him accordingly.
Just as if that was not enough, Ogbeni is now leading Osun in the path of hell! I was preparing to go do some transactions in the bank today when I heard on the morning news that Osun declared public holiday to celebrate Isese day (something very similar to FESTAC – a celebration of the Orisas). It is pathetic to note that while Christianity and Islam are trying to lead people away from idolatry towards the living God, the man at the helm of affairs in Osun State is giving more prominence to the practice of idolatry; the fake Alfa, pretentious Muslim!
Nigeria never gave such prominence to idol worshipping because even the fore-fathers were aware of the existence of a living God and they built the Nation on the solid foundation of those two religions that worship solely, the living God! Where exactly is Ogbeni leading the state if we follow him? HELL! Apologies to Orisa worshippers, but I serve only the living God and I implore them to come into His living light and be free from the hot fire of hell.
When he came in, his initial move was to grant Orisa worshippers pilgrimage to Cuba, I guess this was in a bid to bring them to par with Christians and Muslims who go on Holy Pilgrimage every year. He went further by granting them a slot for prayers at every government function i.e. When a Christian prays, a Muslim will pray and them a traditionalist will pray too! Why should we reference a lesser god when we already made reference to the Almighty?
As I heard the news of the public holiday this morning, I reasoned within myself that this must signify the point where Osun people will collectively rise and say O’TO to this fake Muslim who is trying to take us into the embrace of Lucifer! I thought, if Osun people will not rise up and say O’DABO to this Mister come 2014, the Monatan prophecy would have come to fruition – Osun go!
We must rise up and say a collective O’FAREWELL to the Lagos invaders who are trying to take us back to those days when we were primitive, naive and uncultured! Now we know the true God, we serve Him, we do not keep the affairs of our state in the hands of lesser gods anymore and any agent of these gods will be shown the way out of Bola Ige house. Failing to do this will be giving strength to that 2005 prophecy – Osun go. Succeeding in sending him packing will send clear signals to those funny elements of Monatan that in Osun State, we are wise and resolute – Oyo le go sha!

BOUATE: SALUTE TO THE HEROES WHO PAID THEIR DUES

The street urchins common with streets in Lagos use to have a peculiar way of saluting those they hold in high esteem. They raise two hands up in their air and shout ‘Touale’. You hear ‘owo meji fun eeyan Kan, touale baba’...meaning, ‘two hands for one person, touale old man’. This trend got into the student community and ‘touale’ quickly became the mode of salutation even in the learned environment. Along came this Yoruba actor, renowned for his usual invention of new street slangs, they call him ‘Ose Ose Omo Banke’, wherever he got that from. He re-modelled the street salute and invented ‘bouate’. He said, “no more touale, now bouate”. Whatever that means, I say my own ‘bouate’ to ‘Ose Ose Omo Banke’ for his street charisma (I don’t know if that is positive).
So, if I were to be a senior colleague of yours, what do you do when you see me coming? You raise your two hands in the air and shout ‘BOUATE’. Toh, President Goodluck Jonathan, ‘Bouate’: Rauf Aregbesola, ‘Bouate’: Abiodun Akinwale, ‘Bouate’. Those are the people running the affairs of the governments that directly concern me (Do not make the mistake of thinking I like all of them).
Why do we salute people with our two hands in the air? It is because they are superior in some sense, or they are respectable in another sense, or they are people of honour in some other sense: ‘Bouate’ once again. However, there are people who are not only superior, but they have laid the solid foundation for the betterment of our own lives. Some laid down their lives, some other spent the better parts of their lives in prison, some watered the trees of liberty with their sweat while some prayed fervently in the confines of exile for the future wherein we now live. To this people, it is not only just to respect them, ‘bouate’ at the top of our voices is the least honour we can do them. So, let us salute the heroes who paid their dues....BOUATE!
Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Obafemi Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa, Nnamdi Azikwe, Herbert Macauley, MKO Abiola, Abraham Adesanya, Murtala Muhammed, Ajibola Ige, Shehu Musa Yaradua, Chinua Achebe, Dele Giwa, Tunde Idiagbon, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Ladi Kwali, Margaret Ekpo, Samuel Okwaraji, Odumegwu Ojukwu, Adekunle Fajuyi, Gani Fawehinmi, Umar Musa Yaradua, Fela Anikulapo, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Olusola Saraki, Lamidi Adedibu and all other dead heroes of ours....TRIPLE BOUATE! God rest your souls.
Shehu Shagari, Ernest Shonekan, Nelson Mandela, Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdulsalam Abubakar, Alex Ekwueme, Emeka Anyaoku, Oladipo Diya, Femi Falana, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Samson Siasia, Onyeka Onwenu, Sunday Adegeye – Sunny Ade, Ibrahim Babangida and all those still alive...DOUBLE BOUATE! Long life in good health.
To those of you reading this article who feels a great need to salute these people and many more like them who paid huge prices for the freedom that I and you enjoy today, I salute you...BOUATE!
Let us salute these people again, because the tree of liberty survived because of their non-stop supply of sweat to water it, they paid prices just so me and you may be alive and well in the future most of them never tasted, they worked for their children, for me, for you and for the good of the world.....Raise your hands in the air and let me hear your reverberating BOUATE!
The soldiers who lost their lives while chasing insurgents, those that died in peace-keeping missions across Africa, those police officers who lost their lives in active service, those servicemen who died so the rest of us can sleep with our two eyes closed...the least we can do to salute their courage is a loud shout of BOUATE....Two hands in the air for you people!
Those journalists who died while compiling news so me and you can sit in front of our television sets and watch the news, those researchers who accidentally died in finding cures to different ailments, those footballers who slumped and died....we owe them a very loud salutation, with our two hands in the air...BOUATE!
To those hands still paddling the boats of our society, the political leaders, the Obas, the Obis, the Etsus, the Emirs, the Chiefs, the Civil Servants, the teachers, the servicemen, the road sweepers, the gatemen, the vigilantes, the nurses and midwives and their doctors, the artisans...even the leaders of tomorrow who are going to take us to the future....two hands in the air, at the top of our voices....BOUATE!
BOUATE!!! Salute to those who paid their dues and those who are stillpaying!

NIGERIAN POLICEMEN ARE DEEPLY INVOLVED IN UNLAWFUL ACTIVITIES - AIG

Nigerian policemen are deeply involved in unlawful activities and lose their lives every day
because of that, the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of a Police Zone 6 Command, Mr.
Jonathan Johnson, has admitted. He also acknowledged soaring corruption in the Criminal
Investigation Department (CDI) of the Police Force. He made this statement during his visit to
Akwa Ibom State Police Command in Uyo on Tuesday.
The AIG further lamented, "If you investigate our men, you will discover they are armed robbers.
They are not contented with what they have.
"We go to the road to extort money from people, engage in illegal business, and liaise with
armed robbers."
He, however, warned police officers who engage in criminal acts: when caught, they would be
dismissed.
"No criminal has lived in his criminality and has never been caught. If you want to live in palava,
you will die in palava."
He went on alleging that police officers sold ammunition to criminals, aided, abetted and
manipulated cases, conniving with suspects and conspiring with criminals.
Johnson also alleged that police officers supplied hoodlums with information which aided them
in killing policemen.
He revealed that it was a policeman that gave information to a community in Nasarawa State,
which led to the hoodlums killing over 60 policemen.
He stated that police officers also became security guards for individuals and corporate bodies
without any authority assigning them to the beat.
"The police officers turn themselves to security guards for individuals and corporate
organisations without anyone assigning them. They also go on illegal duty for the purpose of
extorting money from drivers and motorists."
The AIG stated that the police officers would not want to pay for the houses they lived,
concluding that all mentioned attributes work against the police, as the public no longer has
respect for the police force.
He said, "We have turned tyrannical to the public, that is why we receive condemnation
everywhere we go."

MESSI WILL BE WORLD BEST FOR ANOTHER TWO YEARS - SCOLARI

Brazil coach Felipe Scolari has predicted that Barcelona star Lionel Messi will be the best player
in the world for the next two years.
The Argentine attacker has won four consecutive Ballons d'Or and Scolari believes there is still
much more to come from the 26-year-old before the hands of time begin to take their toll on his
performances.
"I think that Lionel Messi will continue to be the best player in the world for the next two years
or so," Scolari was quoted as saying on the official website of the German football association.
"Messi not only plays for the team, but he also has amazing individual skills. He can decide a
match all by himself with his ability."
The Brazil coach then went on to say that Neymar, 21, will need time to adapt to European
football, but is confident that he will succeed at Barca.
"Now that he's at Barcelona, Neymar can show his technical abilities and make the same
individual actions as Messi.
"His first year in Spain will mainly be about learning things and adapting to a new tactical
formation. In Brazil we don't think as much about tactics as in Europe and Neymar will have to
adapt.
"He is eager to learn, though, and will play at a higher level than in Brazil in the Spanish Liga
and the Champions League."
Neymar could make his official Barcelona debut in their Liga opener against Levante on August
18.

NEYMAR UNHAPPY WITH BRAZIL

Barcelona new-kid Neymar was left frustrated as Brazil slumped to a surprise defeat against
Switzerland at St Jakob-Park in Basel.
Luiz Felipe Scolari's men came into the match on the back of an 11-match unbeaten streak,
including a memorable Confederations Cup success over Spain.
But those memories were banished by a lacklustre display against Ottmar Hitzfeld's men and
their 1-0 defeat, courtesy of a Dani Alves own goal, left Neymar lamenting the lack of fitness in
the squad.
"We're only just getting back to work now," stated the 21-year-old.
"Our players are in pre-season and it's hard to get up to speed so quickly."
Neymar was more bullish over Brazil's fortunes for the future however and revealed that there is
a bond in the side following their Confederations Cup glory.
"It was great to reconnect with everyone. I am sure we will improve in the coming matches."
The forward indicated that he wasn't impressed by Switzerland's tactics in Basel, criticising the
hosts for being too defensive.
But one aspect of the Swiss's game that drew praise from their opponents was the performance
of Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri.
The former FC Basel youngster was lauded by FCB team-mates Dante and Luis Gustavo after his
role in the Selecao's dismantling.
"Besides being a great player, my friend has a promising future in both European and even world
football," enthused Gustavo.
Central defender Dante echoed those sentiments, adding "Bayern have invested in one of the
world's great promising players".
"He's a player who is progressing well and works hard. He has great talent, with the work he
puts in, it's no surprise the talent he has."
Gustavo also talked about his future at the club, hinting that he still may have to leave Bavaria
this summer.
"I do not know what will happen," admitted the Arsenal target. "But I do want to define my future
as soon as possible.
"I want to improve my participation and prepare for upcoming friendlies."

REGINA ASKIA BLASTS FEMI-FANI KAYODE, CALLS HIM 'A YORUBA BASTARD'

Former Minister of Aviation and one-time PDP hit man, Chief Femi Fani Kayode who took to
twitter to prove he is not a tribalist by saying he once dated an Igbo Lady, Bianca Ojukwu and
several Igbo women has come under heavy criticism.
Regina Askia Calls Femi Fani Kayode A Yoruba Bastard For Claiming He Dated Bianca Ojukwu &
Igbo Women
Former Nollywood actress Regina Askia has lend her voice to blame ex-Nigerian minister Femi
Fani Kayode over an explanatory article he wrote about the Igbos yesterday.
In this lengthy letter, the former beauty queen called Femi Fani Kayode a drug addict and a
Yoruba bastard for claiming he once dated Bianca Ojukwu and several Igbo women.
She also blamed Igbo ladies and Bianca Ojukwu for having sex with him.
Read her letter below;
I've Just Been Told That Having Sex With An Igbo Woman Is A Great Accomplishment!!! After
reading another hard-drug-influenced-essay by the Yoruba idiot parading himself as Femi Fani-
Kayode,Ex-Minister of the Nigerian Federation, I felt there was no need to blame him for giving
us another reason why his family members should as a matter of urgency, BUNDLE HIM BACK TO
A REHAB! No! I don't blame Femi Fani-Kayode for having a fun-filled day telling us how he
'breezed' through Bianca Onoh before our very revered Eze-Igbo married her.
I blame Bianca Onoh , Chioma Anasoh & Adaobi Uchegbu for being naive or to have rather
stooped so low to have intimate relationship with a Yoruba rascal/urchin/idiot whom i'm very
sure was on heavy use of cocaine (and still is) at the time!
Were Bianca, Chioma & Adaobi blind to Femi's madness/drug-addiction or maybe he flashed his
Ministerial/Ex-Ministerial portfolio to entice them? This is the first time a former public figure (I
blame Former President Obasanjo for giving him that privilege) has preferred to reel out the
names of women he had sex with, in a bid to show-off how he has been able to conquer
tribalism in Nigeria or maybe trying to tell others he has been able to have sex with one of the
prettiest ex beauty queens another tribe may boast of, like Bianca Ojukwu (Nee Onoh) of the Igbo
tribe.
Some persons have adviced that Femi Fani-Kayode should be ignored due to his MENTAL
INSTABILITY but i say NO to it! I will not ignore him because when a mad-man chases one into
his house & still want to exhibit that madness there, the owner of the house will definitely react
except he doesn't value his house!
This has taken a tribal angle & its such a shame that many Yorubas have been applauding Fani-
Kayode's spiteful comments against the Igbo. I may not want to generalize the behavioural
disorders of even the average Yoruba, but i want to use this ample opportunity to remind our
single Igbo sisters that if "He" is not Igbo, He can't be like an Igbo-man who won't be so
ridiculous to think that giving us some of the names of our ladies he had sex with makes him a
superman, as Femi Kayode must be 'thinking' in his fool's paradise.
Right now in Nigeria, the likes of a Yoruba bastard like Femi Fani-Kayode have proved that Igbo
women should think "wisely" in making choices as regards whom they allow 'ACCESS' to their
much fancied bodies. An Igboman would NEVER do what Femi Fani-Kayode did with the names
of Bianca Ojukwu (Nee Onoh), PDP's Adaobi Uchegbu & the relatively unknown Chioma Anasoh
or even women from other tribes. He typically exhibited behavioural disorder of the Yorubas,
which is to them, a normal way of life. What a shame!
Bianca Ojukwu & the other two ladies should as a matter of urgency, reply Femi Fani-Kayode's
show of lunacy, stupidity, foolishness, infantile reasoning & utter disrespect for them!
Femi Fani-Kayode consciously & gladly made a spiteful remark of Igbo women & our women
should take the fight to him in a very deserving impudent manner! I am waiting for the responses
by Bianca, Adaobi & Chioma.
By the way, I never knew men from other tribes take having sex with an Igbo lady as a great
feat… Bianca & others should hold their heads high up.

MOURINHO HAPPY OVER ETOO'S INTEREST IN JOINING CHELSEA

Jose Mourinho is buoyed after learning that Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto'o is keen to
join Chelsea.
The 32-year-old forward recently admitted he was keen to work under the Portuguese once
again, while the Chelsea boss has refused to rule out a move for the Cameroon international
Reports have suggested the big-spending Russian side are looking to cut costs, with the 32-
year-old forward among the players who could be offloaded this summer.
Eto'o claimed he would relish the chance to work with Mourinho once again after winning the
Champions League and Serie A under the Portuguese at Inter, while the Chelsea manager refused
to rule out a move for the Cameroon international.
"I am always happy that somebody that worked with me previously is happy to be back and work
with me again," Mourinho told BT Sport.
"That is a good feeling that I have, when I read something that Samuel is keen.
"It is fantastic for us, but we are going to see what happens."

APC GOVERNORS REJECTS AUTONOMY FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

The governors of the All Progressive Congress, APC, at the end of their meeting
on August 14, 2013, Wednesday, rejected autonomy for Nigerian local governments.
This has been stated in a communiqué released by them after the five-hour meeting in Lafia,
Nasarawa state. The APC governors agreed with the the National Assembly's decision not to
include local government autonomy in the ongoing constitutional amendment.
Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State was the person who read the eight point communiqué.
The governors said autonomy for the local governments would undermine the fundamental
principle of federalism and push the country towards a unitary system.
Lafia meeting of the governors has also been named Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and was
attended by nine governors and one deputy governor.
The attendees are the host, Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Babatunde
Fashola of Lagos, and Abdullazez Yari of Zamfara. Others are Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun, Adams
Oshiomhole of Edo, Rauf Aregbesola of Osun, Kashim Shettima of Borno, and Abiola Ajimobi of
Oyo. The deputy governor of Imo, Eze Madumere, also attended while Yobe governor was not
represented but sent in apology.
"Recognizing the fact that federalism is the basis of our sovereignty, is a matter within the
purview of the federating unit and every attempt to legislate by the national assembly on aspect
of local government administration will tilt the country towards a unitary state. This will
undermine and weaken the fundamental principle of our federalism," the governors said.
In one of the points of the communiqué, the governors also recommended that the power to
amend the revenue allocation formula be removed from the presidency and given to the National
Assembly.
"In spite of recommendations made to the presidency, no effect has been given to the extant
proposal on the need to give more funds to the states and local governments because that is
where the citizens reside. The PGF further recommends that powers to alter the revenue
allocation formula currently with the presidency should be vested in the National assembly," they
said.
Finally, the communiqué praised the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) for
registering the APC in the overall interest of the nation.
The governors have expressed confidence in the interim leadership of the APC and in its
ongoing efforts to develop a healthy relationship among members.

NGF CRISIS: OBASANJO'S PEACE MOVE CRUMBLES

The efforts of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to douse the tension among the governors
elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have failed.
Obasanjo met with the governors on Tuesday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja to intervene
in the crisis rocking the Nigeria Governors' Forum.
A major decision at the meeting was to persuade both Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi;
and his Plateau counterpart, Jonah Jang, to step down for a neutral person as Chairman of the
NGF.
But The PUNCH learnt on Wednesday that the two governors had refused to step down.
Amaechi and Jang are both claiming the chairmanship of the forum since its controversial
election three months ago. The NGF has since split into two with Amaechi and Jang controlling
different factions.
Before the Tuesday's meeting, which ended at a few minutes after 3am, Obasanjo had earlier met
with the governors on Monday night.
The two meetings were said to have centred on discipline in the PDP, the NGF crisis and sundry
issues among which are the crisis in Rivers State; matter of automatic tickets for political office
holders, and lack of cohesion among the governors.
On Wednesday, it was gathered that some of the governors in the Jang faction of the NGF raised
the matter of persuading both Jang and Amaechi to step down but those in the Amaechi Camp
objected, saying that the matter was beyond what could be discussed at the meeting.
Though a source at Monday's meeting said that there was hope that the issue would be resolved,
he said that the matter assumed a new dimension at the resumed meeting on Tuesday when both
parties refused to shift ground.
A source close to the two governors, on Wednesday, said, "There was nothing like that. Both of
them have agreed to stick to their mandate."
He added that though Jang was "almost ready to step down because those who voted for him
were at the meeting, Amaechi however said he needed to meet those who elected him since his
supporters cut across party lines during the election."
The source added that Obasanjo had agreed to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan on the
matter.
Speaking through the Plateau State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Yiljap Abraham, Jang
said, "The meeting is still inconclusive."
The Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari,
described Amaechi as a defender of democratic principles and would not hesitate to yield to the
opinion of the governors that voted him as their chairman.
Semenitari, who spoke with one of our correspondents in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, explained
that the governors had not asked Amaechi to step down, so he remained the NGF chairman,
She said, "What I know is that Nigerians are aware of the democratic process by which the
chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum was picked. As far as I know Governor Chibuike
Amaechi, I also know that he believes that the democratic process should not in any way be one
that we will treat with levity.
"Everybody who knows Amaechi knows that he does defend democratic principles. What I am
certain of is that the Chairman of the NGF as of today is Rt. Honourable Chibuike Rotimi
Amaechi.
"But if all of the governors, especially the governors who voted for Governor Amaechi, ask him to
step down, that would mean that the majority of the governors have decided that there should be
a new chairman. Naturally, he would concede to his colleagues. But today, that is not the case."
Meanwhile, one of the aggrieved northern governors, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, on
Wednesday met with the President behind closed-doors at the Villa, Abuja.
That was the first time Nyako would meet with Jonathan alone since the crises rocking the PDP
and the NGF started.
While speaking with State House correspondents at the end of his meeting with Jonathan, Nyako
insisted that Jang did not have any claim to the NGF chairmanship because he did not win the
election.
When asked specifically whether the governors resolved at their recent meeting with Obasanjo
that both Jang and Amaechi should step down as the chairman of the NGF, the governor said,
"You are saying Jang should step down, step down for what? Did he win the election? What we
are saying here is that if he is going to step down because he is second winner, then that is their
business and it is not the business of others or the winner to tell him to step down. He is
number two, he got the second highest votes and that is the way forward. Step down for what?
From number two to where? Number three or four?"
Nyako said the crisis in the NGF was unnecessary because it was clear that Amaechi won the
election.
He said one of the criteria of electing a leader for the forum was that their chairman must be
trustworthy.
He said while the governors wanted a chairman that would have a cordial relationship with the
President, they could not be comfortable with a chairman that would turn himself to the
President's "yes man."
Nyako said, "The election in the governors' forum has become an issue. It should not be an
issue. When you say 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20, even someone who is in elementary school knows
which one is higher.
"If one group got 19 votes and the other got 16, in a democracy even in the eyes of the people in
elementary school, they know that 19 is higher than 16. It should not be turned into a
controversy."
When asked whether the NGF issue was discussed in the meeting with Obasanjo, he simply said,
"It was part of it but you should understand the rationale."

WHAT DOESN'T KILL YOU, MAKES YOU CAREFUL! - ODERINU ADEDAYO

I wonder how many times I have also made the mistake of echoing the quote ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! Now that I think about it, I am not really sure the quote is practically correct let alone makes real life sense. I do not want to sound like I am rebuking the forefathers who invented this saying or whoever it might be credited to, I only write about what I hold to be practically verifiable.
A young man was travelling from Ilorin to Lagos. In trying to reduce the cost of transport because he was certainly broke, he had to stand by the road side around Airport Road in Ilorin to board what Yoruba people call ‘soole’. True to desire, the fare was practically give-away and he joyfully boarded the bus. Unfortunately for this young man, he was (as you might already be imagining) kidnapped, transported to an unknown destination in the middle of nowhere. On arrival, he was tested (of course metaphysically) and found unsuitable for the ritual for which he would have been the proverbial sacrificial lamb and was set free. He had been to the house of death and he made it out alive. This story is just a mere fiction (though it has happened severally in Nigeria), but the moral of the story is, will this experience make this young man stronger or careful? Careful gets my vote.
Another young man in one of the small towns in the South-West was in a relationship with a very beautiful lady. It was a bed roses (of course we know nothing in life is) and everything seemed to be working perfectly. A date for their wedding ceremony was fixed and much preparation began towards making the day a talk of the society. Alas, on the D-day, it was discovered that the bride had skipped town with a rich man from America. Does this heart-break make the young man stronger or more careful in choosing another lady? And again, careful gets my vote!
A young soldier was going to war and as it was his first time, he was not accustomed to the real experiences of a real war situation; he had not been battle-tested. When he got to the war front, he flouted the Commander’s orders and found himself in the line of fire. As you can imagine, he got brutally wounded and was in critical condition for months before he eventually got better. Will this experience make him stronger or careful next time? CAREFUL gets my vote yet!
Since a landslide victory for CAREFUL has been recorded, I can proceed on that premise. Nigerians has been described time and again as the Happiest People on earth. You wonder why this is so? There is no other practical reason than the fact that despite the sufferings and injustice in our nation, an average Oshodi vagabond sleeping and waking up under the bridge can still wake up with a smile on his face and say ‘Oya now’. Nigerians must really be a very happy nation!
Truth be told, Nigerians have seen it all. From dictatorship, to corrupt political leadership even to an incapacitated interim government, Nigerians can beat their chest and tell the world, ‘we have tasted it all’. From Civil War to Niger Delta militancy to Boko Haram Insurgency and the rest, what else have we not seen? I think it is just safe to conclude that Nigeria is the perfect training ground for anybody willing to ‘see it all’.
However, despite all the societal problems prevalent in our country, the population is still rising; people are still pro-creating, we are still moving on. We have made bad choices in the past, choices that have left us paying back dearly for our carelessness in the past. We have made mistakes in supporting bad leaders on their quest to attain office, we have made mistakes of encouraging hooliganism in kids when it could have been curbed before it escalated into militancy, we have made mistakes of allowing religious and tribal sentiments to thrive within us when we could have stopped its spread; we have simply done it all.
The grievous experiences we have had as repercussions of these mistakes has not made us any stronger, these experiences though did not kill most of us, has not made us immune to the effects of bad governance neither has it made us immune to Boko Haram bullets nor Militants’ grenades; we are not stronger!
We can not claim to be getting immune to the adverse effects of the vices in the society; we can only strive to avoid re-occurrence in future. Here again, careful will get my vote. The times to elect new leaders approaches us very speedily and there is no best time to stand for what is just and right than this time. This is the time to rally round credibility even if it be found in Fresh Democratic Party. This is the time to be careful, the time to meticulously screen politicians who approach us for votes, it is the time to CAREFULLY correct the ills we have committed in the past, it is the time for change.
We must elect good leaders, we must discourage insurgency in any form it may arise and we must tirelessly build a new nation, one man at a time....for as IT has not killed us, IT should make us CAREFUL!

APC WILL WIN PRESIDENCY IN 2015 - AMOSUN

The newly registered All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State held its inaugural meeting
yesterday with the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun boasting that the party would deliver
the country from the alleged misrule of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The merged political parties' stakeholders also promised to work for the progress of the party.
The meeting came on the heels of the valedictory meeting of the defunct Action Congress of
Nigeria (ACN) held behind closed doors in Abeokuta on Sunday.
During the meeting, chieftains of defunct party that included Senators Akin Odunsi (Ogun West);
Gbenga Kaka (Ogun East) and Gbenga Obadara (Ogun Central) were urged to bury their personal
grievances to achieve success for the newly registered party.
Leading the group was the state Governor, Senator Amosun, who described APC as the true
progressive party.
He said if the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo were alive, the founder of the Action Group
would have loved to be a member of the party.
According to him, the APC would deliver the country from the misrule of the PDP in the 2015
general elections.

US GUARANTEES STRESS-FREE VISA PROCESS FOR NIGERIANS

The U.S Consul General, Jeffery Hawkins has assured Nigerians seeking to migrate to the United
States under its various visa categories will worry less over visa procurement, as a smooth and
successful visa processing is promised to them.
The assurance was made during a meeting to usher in United States bi-national commission's
build-up dialogue with the Nigerian government.
The development would ensure that every Nigerian intending to migrate to the U.S for various
reasons is given special consideration, given the fact that both countries have maintained
consistent and cordial bi-national relations in various key areas of their economies.
Hawkins, who indicated that Nigeria was the United States' most important partner in Africa ,
given its demonstration of a high degree of friendship, trust and cooperation for tangible
progress on critical issues of both countries' mutual interest, added, "For Nigerians who wish to
visit the United States, my goal is to ensure that the visa application process comes as painless
and pleasant as possible. This is because we have invested in new staff, installed new
equipment and overhauled our processes, so as to provide Nigerian visa applicants with the best
of visa services."
He also stated, "The wait time for non-immigrant visa appointment is now just a fraction of what
it once was, in order to ensure that Nigerians are not kept waiting for more than they would want
to."
The consul general who expressed the need for applicants to desist from submitting fraudulent
documentation, the number one reason for denial visa, implored all intending visa applicants to
ensure that they provide the consulate with authentic and stipulated visa requirements in order
to avoid visa denial or ban as the case may be.
In other words, applicants who submit fraudulent documentations to the U.S Consulate for their
visa processing would have to accommodate the sad end that such singular action would cause
them.
It is important for applicants to note that the U.S consulate has several detective devices to
ensure that they process only documentations from the right Nigerian issuing authorities.
In view of the foregoing, therefore, applicants who provide fraudulent documentations and or
uncompleted embassy stipulated requirements in relation to required visa types, are bound to
either have their visa application returned or denied.
1.5m Nigerians grow US economy
It is estimated that more than 1.5 million Nigerians resident in the U.S, and about 31,000 United
States citizens resident in Nigeria, have invested enormously to the growth of the economies of
both countries.
This number of Nigerians reportedly migrate to the U.S yearly, as immigrants, tourists, students
and workers, and presently. Nigeria has about 7,000 of its bright young populace pursuing
higher education in various academic fields in universities across the U.S.
The engagement may have contributed to the U.S government's proposed invitation of a very
special set of young Nigerians with track records of leadership and services to their communities
to visit the U.S in 2014, through the Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders platform.
Under the platform, selected fellows will be moved to top American universities for trainings in
entrepreneurship, management and leadership. This is expected to be seconded with internship
and job opportunities at top companies in Africa.
These commitments to an extent confirm the fact that both countries are seriously engaged in
efforts aimed at promoting cordial bi-national relationships to achieve good and productive
ideas, which in turn they both would benefit from.
United States consul general in Nigeria, Mr. Jeffrey Hawkins, said, "Each year, a handful of young
officers at the Consulate mentor and support 15 young Nigerians who have ideas for community
service projects. Subsequently, the United States Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative, CYFI,
and the results regularly astound me, because the Carrington fellows have touched the lives of
tens of thousands of their fellow Nigerians, and they have themselves developed into more
capable and confident leaders."

NEW TRANSPORT SYSTEM CAN TRAVEL LOS ANGELES TO SAN FRANCESCO IN 30 MINS

Paypal billionaire Elon Musk has revealed plans for a radical new 'Hyperloop' transport system
that could 'shoot' passengers from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 30 minutes.
Travellers enter aluminium pods mounted by skis either to their feet or to their cars, top. The
pods, mounted above the ground on columns 50 to 100 yards apart, travel through steel tubes,
reaching speeds of up to 800mph and travelling on a cushion of air.
Musk told Bloomberg Business Week the system would be 'like getting a ride on Space Mountain
at Disneyland.' 'It would have less lateral acceleration-which is what tends to make people feel
motion sick-than a subway ride, as the pod banks against the tube like an airplane,' he said.
'It would feel supersmooth.' 'The Hyperloop (or something similar) is, in my opinion, the right
solution for the specific case of high traffic city pairs that are less than about 1500 km or 900
miles apart,' he claimed.
Inside the tubes, hyperloop pods are mounted on thin skis made out of inconel,an alloy already
used by Musk's SpaceX firm that can withstand high pressure and heat. Air is pumped into the
skis via small holes to make an air cushion, and each pod has air inlets at the front.
An electric turbo compressor compresses air from the nose and routes it to the skis and to the
cabin. Magnets on the skis, plus an electromagnetic pulse give the pod its initial thrust;
reboosting motors along the route would keep the pod moving at just below the speed of sound
so the system does not produce sonic booms.

PUBLIC SHAME: MEET THE EDO TEACHER WHO CAN'T READ OWN CREDENTIALS

It was a drama of sorts during the verification exercise of primary school teachers' certificates in
Edo State on Tuesday as one of the teachers in the state, Mrs. Augusta Odemwingie, could not
read a sworn affidavit she tendered as part of her credentials.
Mrs. Odemwingie teaches at Asologun Primary School, Ikpoba Okha local government area of
Benin City, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who paid an unscheduled visit to the State Staff
Training Centre venue of the exercise was appalled that a teacher could not read, saying "if you
can't read, what do you teach the pupils? What do you write on the board?"
The Chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Patrick Ikosimi,
who was also at the screening to monitor the exercise, said the woman's failure was "an
embarrassment."
On arrival at the centre, the governor took time to peruse some of the teachers' credentials and
documents presented.
When Mrs. Odenwingie took her turn during the exercise, the governor who listened to her
defence asked her to read the affidavit she presented.
She stuttered and read the affidavit as if a kindergarten was learning to read, to the
consternation of everybody around.

EDUCATION CRISIS: ANOTHER ASUP STRIKE MAY BEGIN SOON

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) announced the decision to
suspend the nationwide strike on July 16, 2013. Unfortunately, it has just been a pause.
ASUP is gearing for another industrial action, which would commence after next week, and would
be indefinite.
The union made the appropriate statement on August 13, 2013, Tuesday during the mass protest
to 'save public education' in Lagos.
"The suspension of the strike will expire next week and up till now government has not done any
single thing in the agreement," said Chibuzo Asomugha, ASUP's National President.
After 81 days of inactivity in polytechnics across Nigeria, the union decided to suspend the
strike following the level of progress made in negotiations with the government.
ASUP said that it suspended the strike to allow the Senate Joint Committee on Education to
liaise with relevant government agencies with a view to tackling the union's demands within one
month.
Among ASUP's demands include the need for constitution of the Governing Councils of Federal
Polytechnics; migration of the lower cadre to CONTISS 15 salary scale; and the "worrisome
condition" of state-owned polytechnics in the country.
"Government should stop paying lip service to public education," said Mr. Asomugha. "The closer
you get to this people in government, the more you lose hope."

'WE CAN'T MEET YOUR DEMANDS' - FG TELLS ASUU

Hopes of quick resolution of the present face-off between the Federal Government and the
Academic Staff Union of Universities were dashed on Tuesday as the Minister of Finance, Dr.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the government has no resources to meet the union demands.
Foreclosing possible truce to the five-week old industrial action that has paralysed academic
activities in the nation's ivory towers, Okonjo-Iwela said the striking university lecturers were
asking for N92 billion in extra allowances, maintaining that government lack means of picking
the bill.
Speaking in Minna at the annual National Council on Finance and Economic Development
meeting, the minister said that ASUU demand was coming at a time government was making
efforts at reducing the structure of public expenditures.
The theme of the meeting is: "Restructuring Nigeria's Finances." She said, "At present ASUU
wants the government to pay N92 billion in extra allowances when resources are not there and
when we are working to integrate past increases in pensions.
We need to make choices in this country as we are getting to the stage where recurrent
expenditures take the bulk of our resources and people get paid but can do no work."
She declared that if the demands of the university lecturers are met and "we continue to pay
them salaries and allowances we will not be able to provide infrastructure in the universities."
The minister argued that when she assumed office "the share of recurrent expenditure in our
total budgets had increased astronomically. " "In fact recurrent expenditures accounted for about
77.2 per cent of the federal budget and we are now working to re-balance this ratio," the
minister added.

NGF BATTLE: JANG, AMAECHI MAY STEP DOWN

Strong indications emerged from the Monday meeting by President Goodluck Jonathan and governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP
that governors Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State and Jonah Jang of Plateau State who both chair
two Secretariats of the Nigeria Governors' Forum, NGF will step down.
According to a source at the meeting which took place at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential
Villa, Amaechi who emerged as Chairman of the NGF for his second term in May after an election
held at the Rivers State Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja after scoring 19 votes to defeat Jang of Plateau
State who polled 16 votes will drop the position as well as Jang for peace to return to the family
of the party

S/AFRICAN WOMEN MARRIED TO NIGERIANS THREATEN PROTEST

South African women married to Nigerians, yesterday, threatened to stage
mass protest in Johannesburg to stop discrimination against them, their husbands and
children.
Mrs Lindelwa Uche, the chairperson of the United Nigerian Wives in South Africa, UNWISA,
made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria during the launch of the
association, Sunday, in Johannesburg.
Uche said that South African society did not take their marriage to Nigerians as serious
relationships.
She said: “Our society does not take our marriages serious, they see our marriages as relations
of convenience and perceive us as evil to the society.
“All of us are South Africans married to Nigerians living in South Africa, we decided to come
together to fight against stigmatisation, discrimination, and humiliation, against our families
by government departments and agency and the officials of the government, the community
and our-in-laws.”
The chairperson said an earlier protest march by the members of the association had not
generated any response from the Home affairs office.
“We protested against discrimination from home affairs officials in March this year, and since
after that protest we have not received any response from the government. We felt before we
embark on any further action we should come together and form an association registered by
law.
“After the official launch of our association, our next action will be more than just a protest
march to the city of Johannesburg home affairs office. It is going to be a protest where we will
strip on the street of Johannesburg, so that people and government will know that there is an
existing body and that we are not happy with the way our non South Africans husband and
children are being treated.
“We also plan to carry our protest to Nigeria, we know that some South Africans also have
businesses in Nigeria, if it is necessary we will take actions that will stop South Africa
businesses operating in Nigeria. Indeed we are ready to go that far.
“We have been quiet for so long but we cannot can’t take it anymore, for the sake of the future
of our children, we have to put an end to this discrimination.”
She said there was need for them to collectively tackle the issue of some Nigerians residing in
South Africa being unfairly separated from their families due to pending residence permit that
eventually lead to deportations.
“If we don’t stand up as daughter of the soil and fight discrimination against our marriages
who will, if we don’t stand up and fight for the rights of our husbands when they are being
violated and treated shabily by officials of the government and citizens alike who will.
“If we don’t stand up for our children when they are being called derogatory names like “Small
lee kwere-kwere” or turning their natives names upside down deliberately by our community in
the name of making them feel like aliens, outcast, and unwelcome, or even when their Nigerian
aunties and uncles call them bustards, then their future is in jeopardy.
“If we don’t stand up when our countrymen and women, officials and in-law address us as
paper wives, gold diggers, stupid and opportunist, who will do that for us, ” Uche queried.
She said the notion that all Nigerians are criminals must be corrected.
“We are in a country of law and order, if anyone is found guilty let the law take its course, we
are not saying Nigerians
are good or bad, even in the South Africa society, there are criminals and indeed there is no
country in the world that does not have criminals,’’ Uche said.
Ikechkwu Anyene, President of the Nigeria Union in South Africa (NUSA), said the association
is a good initiative by the women who are suffering discrimination and humiliation because
they are married to Nigerians.
“We at the NUSA have been working with them even before the association was registered as a
body, we were with them when they carried a protest match to the home affairs office in
Johannesburg,
“we will continue to support them to achieve their goal which is to put an end to
discrimination by the government officials and their brothers and sisters towards them for
being married to Nigerian.
“The initiative is also to unite Nigeria and South Africa and indeed the whole of Africa, to see
each other as brothers and sisters and to ensure that we stand by one another,” Anyene said.
He, however, advised the body to carry along all South Africans married to Nigerians
irrespective of their tribe and geo-political zone and the tribe of their husbands.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH MADAM GOVERNOR?

I have watched with keen interest the manner in which Miss Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo, daughter of the former Governor of Oyo State, Omololu Olunloyo has been ravaging the Nigerian media scene like a wounded lion. She has in recent times dominated the social media platforms and other media platforms taking a swipe at anybody or group she believes are not conforming to her life models.

She constantly describes christians as "fools" and "dickheads" and muslims are never spared. Is she a pagan of some sort or this is just her strategy of driving traffic to her online pages where she makes thousands of dollars, at least according to her? Or does she hate God enough to always try to insult those who attempt to serve Him?

Speaking of sex, she has kept up a habit of using vulgar words, uncensored manners of talking about sex where she portrays herself as a kind of woman who would rather take sex toys over men! Is she so morally decadent or she is just exploiting the sexual malady of many Nigerians to get them to her page?

Speaking politically, she calls herself Madam Governor, sometimes claims she will contest something in future and come round later to rubbish such claims. She will someday support the PDP and another day condemn both the PDP and every other opposition party. Is she politically confused or is it just another media stunt?

A lot about the life of Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo is ambiguous making many ask the question, what exactly is wrong with Madam Governor? Whatever is wrong with her however, she is a media guru anyday!

THE BITTER TRUTH ABOUT FEMI FANI-KAYODE BY OBI NWAKANMA (THE VANGUARD)

I read with a lot of amusement the piece of clap-trap circulated through the Nigerian
blogosphere last week titled ‘The Bitter truth about the Igbo” authored by Mr. Femi Fani-
Kayode.
I thought for a minute: but they said the guy went to Cambridge! Then again, take a scallywag
to Cambridge, he merely becomes a Cambridge-trained scallywag. There were many things
Kings College Lagos and Cambridge University could have taught, and might have failed to
teach Mr. Fani-kayode.
One of such things is felicity with truth. He does write about “bitter truths” and about the
“Igbo” and his submissions were in fact more bitter than true about the Igbo. For one, Femi
Fani-Kayode who claims to be “half-Lagosian” has not quite explained what that “half” means
after the genomic mathematics that also locates and divides the Fani-Kayodes of Ife in another
instance into “part Fulani” in the general scheme of things in Nigeria. I will not dwell on Fani-
Kayode’s identity politics. I’m yet to understand it.
It will require one to be quite high on something to tease it all out, and so I leave that part to
Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode. But I suspect that in situating himself to be “half-Lagosian” he means
that part of his ancestry may be found among the “owners” of Lagos, that is, the indigenous
settlers of Lagos.
For purposes of context, let me summarize Femi Fani-Kayode’s argument rendered in two
parts, starting with the first titled “Lagos, the Igbo and the Servants of Truth”: to him the Igbo
have basically no claim on Lagos and have made hardly a contribution to its development.
According to Fani-Kayode“The Igbo had little to do with the development of Lagos between
1890 till today and that is a fact. Other than Ajegunle, Computer Town, Alaba and buying up a
few market stalls in Isale Eko where is their input? Meanwhile the Yoruba and Lagos were very
gracious to them and not only allowed them to return after the civil war to claim their
properties and jobs but we welcomed them with open arms and allowed them to flourish in our
land. This is something that they have never done for our people in the east.
Now some of them have the effontry (sic) to call our land and the land of our forefathers (I am
half Lagosian and was brought up in Lagos) ”no-man’s land” and others have the nerve to
assert that up to 50 per cent of the development in Lagos came as a consequence of the input
of the Igbo. This is utter rubbish.”
These are the very words of Femi, hot under his collars because Igbo Lagosians are staking
their own claims to a part of the Nigerian commonwealth to which they have made enormous
contributions both in material and in blood.
Fani-Kayode may deny it, but Lagos is nothing if not the result of an agglomeration of forces;
a diversity of people from across the world and across the modern nation gathering at the
epicenter and the margins of the metropolis in what Homi Bhabha calls “dissemination.”
But Mr. Fani-Kayode is still hung up on sterile nativism of the sort that makes it impossible
for him to think clearly or rationally; he chooses to levitate on the illusory baloney that
inspires him to declare Lagos to be the “patrimony of the Yoruba.” No. Lagos is the patrimony
of every Nigerian who steps in it.
Lagos belongs as much to the ethnic Igbo as to the Yoruba, Ijaw, Hausa, Fulani, Efik, Idoma,
Urhobo, Itshekiri, Edo, and so on who live in it, pay tax, identify with it, and settles in it. That
compact was made the moment Nigeria became a single nation, and a successor power to the
old principalities who were subdued and who ceded their sovereignty for the new
commonwealth of Nigeria.
The Igbo did not beg to be Nigerians. First they fought for its freedom. When the Nigerian
kitchen became too hot, they chose to leave. But a war was levied on the Igbo that forced
them back to Nigeria. That war was fought to preserve “One Nigeria” even if the Igbo had had
enough of “one Nigeria.” That war ended in 1970. The Igbo returned, and their return to Lagos
and other parts of Nigeria was neither an act of charity nor kindness.
It was pragmatic. The Igbo had the skill and the industry, and Lagos was the seat of the
Federal government of Nigeria and its major port. The Igbo have lived in Lagos since the 15th
century when the Aro and other Igbo first settled in good number in a place we now call
“Oyingbo” in the era of Benin and the Portuguese trade.
Igbo have been in Lagos, in other words, long before the first Fani-Kayode knew the road to
Ilesha. So, when Femi Fani-Kayode writes that the Yoruba were “kind” to the Igbo because, in
his words, “we allowed them to return to Lagos” after the civil war, he is not being a servant of
truth. In any case, about kindness, he might wish to talk to the likes of Eze Okpoko N’Oba,
whose property in Lagos was appropriated to this day by a prominent Yoruba as “abandoned
property” after the war.
I do not wish to insult the intelligence and regard of the many honorable Yoruba people I
know who do not buy into Mr. Fani-Kayode’s views, and so I will keep this simple: nobody,
even of average intelligence, can deny the impact and contribution of the Igbo in the political,
cultural, and economic development of Lagos as a great Nigerian city; the greatest of them in
fact, in the modern era.
The arrival of Azikiwe to Lagos in 1937 from Accra after his studies in the United States,
stimulated the political and cultural environment of Lagos as no other has before or after him.
Zik literally resurrected the wizard of Kirsten hall from political death. Zik represented Lagos in
the western house. The NCNC was the power in Lagos, and not the Action Group. The Igbo
were prominent in the governance of Lagos in the Lagos City Hall.
The institutional development of Lagos – the railways, the ports and ship yards; the education
and research facilities; the Banking and Commodities Exchange, the development of towns like
Yaba, Surulere, Ebutta-Metta, Festac Town, Victoria Island, and now Increasing the Ajah-Lekki
axis, and of course, the ghettoes along the Orile-Badagry axis, have profound Igbo imprimatur.
The circulation of the image of Lagos is to date best reflected in the cosmopolitan Igbo
imagination of one of the greatest African writers of the 20th century, Cyprian Ekwensi, a
thorough Lagosian if there was any. Igbo have built industries in Lagos and have been drivers
of commerce and exchange.
Side by side with their Yoruba, Efik, Itshekiri, Urhobo, etc. neighbors, they have continued to
negotiate the complex evolution of this city. The development had not much to do with the
Western government; even then, Mr. Fani Kayode often forgets that the Igbo were part of the
Western Region when it extended, until 1963, to the bridgehead at Asaba. Lagos is not the
patrimony of the Yoruba.
If any should make such a vicarious claim, it might be the Oba of Benin, to whom Lagos paid
tributes up until its annexation and colonization in 1861. Fani Kayode should read more and be
driven less by sophomoric enthusiasm and braggadocio.

APC ACID TEST - NGIGE BATTLES OKONKWO FOR ANAMBRA GOVERNORSHIP TICKET

IN Anambra State, there is a rat race for the governorship ticket of the newly registered mega
opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The leading contenders for the party’s flag are Senator Annie Okonkwo, Senator Chris Ngige
and Mr. Godwin Ezemo.
Senator, Okonkwo, the party’s deputy national chairman (South) says he is in a pole position
to become APC’s standard bearer ahead of other anglers for the slot, giving his business
acumen, employment creation, care for humanity through philanthropy and experience.
However, Senator Ngige is currently the lawmaker representing Anambra Central in the Senate
says the position of Anambra chief helmsman is not for green horns just as another aspirant
on the banner of the APC, Mr. Godwin Ezemo, says Anambra citizenry need a capable hand like
him to salvage the state from hopelessness.

I’m tested and trusted – Ngige
Ngige, a medical doctor, governed the state between 2003 and 2006 on the platform of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) until the courts nullified his election on account of
irregularities and handed the seat to Mr. Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance
(APGA). Obi has been ruling the state since 2006. His second term will expire next March.
Ngige, who later decamped to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) on which platform he won
a senatorial seat is in the race to succeed Obi. But to do that he has to get a ticket, which he
hopes to accomplish through the APC, a party he co-founded. Until the ACN merged into APC
with the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and some
members of APGA, he was the defunct ACN’s sole South-East senator.
Declaring his ambition via a letter to the Senate President, which was read on the Senate floor,
late July, he said: “I have concluded my consultations, and now find it necessary to officially
inform this Senate that I will be an Aspirant, and hopefully a Candidate in the November 16,
2013 Governorship election in Anambra State. Please wish me luck and offer your prayers for
me, even if you are not of my party.
“I intend to use the vehicle of the Progressives – our newly merged political party – The All
Progressives Congress (APC)…It is to the benefit of all Nigerians that Anambra State is well
governed, has peace, progress and sustainable development. This task is, therefore, not for
unsteady or untested hands that would seek to learn on the job. Anambra State needs an
experienced, tried and tested hand. The people believe that the Almighty God will do it for
them through me.”

How I’ll transform Anambra —Okonkwo
A knight of the Order of St John International (KSJI), Senator Okonkwo, 58, was Ngige’s
immediate predecessor at the Senate. He represented Anambra Central in the Upper Chamber
on the plank of the PDP between 2007 and 2011. He aspired for the governorship seat in 2011
and later defected to the APGA. He was in the merger committee that hammered out modalities
for the APC merger, leading a host of APGA members to the nascent opposition party.
Senator Okonkwo said he would transform Anambra State, if elected. A numerous local and
international award winner and chief executive of numerous communication and
telecommunication companies, Okonkwo, in a statement on his gubernatorial quest, said,
“after a proper look at the aspirants vying for the position of the governor and as somebody
who has the people at heart, I believe I would do the job better.”
The aspirant, who has informed the party that he was going to contest the Anambra
governorship election, said he could forfeit anything to enable him salvage his people from
what they are currently facing in the state.
His words: “Our great party, the All Progressives Congress believes in internal democracy, I
don’t want to be imposed and I also know that nobody would be imposed. To that extent, I
believe I stand to win the party’s primary election and with that, the party will comfortably win
the governorship election. It is a first test for the party.
“APC is seriously preparing for the election and we are very confident that we are going to win
the election, to enable us deliver what we have for the people of Anambra State.
“Today, in Anambra, people are scared of traveling to the state because of the fear that they
might be kidnapped, but if we win the election it will stop automatically because we are going
to provide sufficient job for the masses.”
Essentially, Okonkwo said his mission statement is “to offer quality service inspired by
selfless and faithful commitment to the development of our nation in general and our people in
particular.”
The business czar is chairman, Zoom Mobile Ltd (winner, This Day Best Information
Communications Technology (ICT) Company 2008); Clemco Industries Ltd; Modern
Communications Ltd (MCL); Maclemms Marketing Communications Ltd; Clemco Plastic Limited;
Pentagon Oil Limited; and Sunflower Industries Ltd.
His numerous awards and honours include: Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Award for Excellence in
Enterprise by WAIM; National Productivity Order of Merit Award; Euro Market Brussels
leadership award in recognition of exemplary Leadership by Leadership Watch;
Award of Excellence by Advocacy for Democracy Dividend; International Business Leadership
award by News Agency of Nigeria; Eminent persons Hall of Fame Awards by Nigeria News
world Fame Achievers Award; and Reltel wireless, Best Telephone Company of the year for four
years by NITTA and the West African Direct Marketing Award (2006). With over 2,000 Nigerians
and expatriates under his employ, Okonkwo said: “I founded this manufacturing company that
produces high quality soaps and detergents which is competing very well in the West Africa
Sub-region markets. Its success is a testimony of my entrepreneurial competence.”

I’ve a big task to redeem Anambra’s hope— Ezemo
Also speaking, Ezemo said he would redeem what he termed the hopelessness of the people of
Anambra State, if elected.
Addressing guests at a reception organized by a socio-political group, Association of Anambra
Indigenes Revival Initiatives, AAIRI, in Lagos, Ezemo lamented that despite the natural and
human resources in the State, Anambrarians have become beggars and destitute in their own
fatherland.
He said: “I’m delighted to be among the capable hands that can govern Anambra State. But
despite our abundant natural and human resources, the people have pitiably become beggars
and destitute in their own country. Returning to the country, in the last six years, I have been
bothered by the level of poverty glaring my people in the face; that is why I have decided to
take this bold step to see how we can cause change in Anambra.
“I must tell you that I have lost my privacy because I want to save Anambra State from its
doldrums. However, I strongly hold the view that the forthcoming election is not a do-or-die
affair.
This is why I leave everything in the hands of God to decide. If God says yes that I’m the one
to lead Anambra State, then Anambrarians should start counting their blessings. But if it
doesn’t happen, I will take it in good fate, because it will be on record that when
Anambrarians called upon me to lead them, I answered their call.”
He decried what he referred to as the moral decadence of governance that had become a do-
or-die affair.
Asked his major programmes for the state, Ezemo, who described himself as a successful
farmer promised to invest massively in power, if elected governor. “As a successful farmer, I
will ensure that Anambra becomes the food basket of Nigeria. Agriculture will have to come
back in the state …When there’s stable power supply in Anambra; massive industrial revolution
will take place, even as the high graduate unemployment bedeviling the state will be a thing of
the past.
However, I still insist that government can’t do this alone. All hands must be on deck to
achieving this. One major thing my administration will do is to provide the thriving
environment for investors. Once this is done especially through the provision of stable power,
we need not go all the way out to look for investors, because they will come looking for us.

FG TO HAND OVER PHCN TO INVESTORS BY SEPTEMBER 21

The Federal Government will hand over privatized successor companies of the Power
Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, to private investors on September 21, 2013, if the
investors pay on schedule.
The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, PBE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, disclosed
this in an interview in Abuja.
He disclosed that the PHCN privatization was expected to earn the Federal Government about
$2 billion.
Dikki said: “To purchase this Power Holding Company, over $2 billion will be paid by the
bidders, and that is because the investors can see a clear investment horizon. They don’t have
to go and lobby anybody, all they require is to meet the technical requirement, go to the
regulatory authority, apply for licence and they are limited by their own ingenuity and their
access to the capital.
“When they pay by September 21, we will hand over the companies to them or anybody who
pays earlier and then they begin to operate.
“Labour issues have been resolved and the implementation committee on settlement of the
PHCN staff terminal benefits commenced payment of N118 billion to the over 20,000 PHCN
staff, at the beginning of this month”.
The BPE boss said the privatization programme of the Federal Government had significantly
opened up the Nigerian economy by creating the right atmosphere for greater private sector
participation in several key sectors.
He said the telecommunications sector stood out in terms of attracting massive foreign
investment, which he put at about $40 billion to date.
His words: “The Nigerian economy is becoming more and more liberalised. So, we in the
Bureau of Public Entreprise are not surprised. That is what we have been working for.
“That is the benefit of the reform, which the Bureau of Public Entreprise has been
spearheading and also in consonance with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck
Jonathan’s administration”.
“What this transformation agenda is doing is to create an enabling environment for the private
sector investment in the country and that has given rise to reform activities in various
sectors.”

SUNDAY MBA NOT QUALIFIED FOR UK WORK PERMIT

EPL side Stoke City will not consider a move for Sunday Mba as he did not play enough games
for Nigeria to be granted a work permit.
Netherlands-based agent Richard Umejei told MTNFootball.com that a proposed move to the
EPL for Mba fell through because in the last two years, the player has only played 10 of the 20
internationals involving Nigeria.
Umejei disclosed: “It’s a pity Mba can no longer go to Stoke City because of work permit
issues.
“He played 10 matches out of 20 matches, which is far below the 75% required for him to be
granted a work permit. Had he played another five matches, he would have been good to go.

MY FOOTBALL DOES MY TALKING FOR ME - C. RONALDO

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has stressed that events taking place off the pitch do not
affect him as he prefers to let his football do the talking for him.
Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho's jibe earlier this week that the Portugal star is not 'the real
Ronaldo' led to controversy ahead of Wednesday's International Champions Cup final between
both sides, but the 28-year-old has remained unperturbed by his former boss' taunts.
Ronaldo already stated on Monday that Mourinho's comments did not deserve a reply and
remained calm again on Wednesday after helping Madrid to a 3-1 win over Chelsea with two
goals.
"I do my talking on the pitch. Things that happen off of it do not affect me," the Portugal
international told reporters.
"I just aim to help Real Madrid to achieve its objectives and what happens away from there does
not hurt me."
Ronaldo then went on to discuss Madrid's Champions League ambitions this season and
stressed that they still have plenty to do before they can think about an historic 10th European
crown.
He added, "There is a long way to go, we will try to do our best. We have a good team and the
new players are very good and hopefully the Decima will come this year."

WHY I PROPOSED TO LOLA OMOTAYO - PETER P'SQUARE

One half of the multiple award-winning P-Square, Peter Okoye, last Tuesday, shocked many of
his fans when he finally proposed to Lola Omotayo, his long time friend and mother of his two
kids (Cameron and Aliona) with a diamond ring and a brand new white Range Rover Vogue worth
N15 million.
The proposal put to rest the widespread criticisms that have trailed their
relationship over the years. Lola, who said 'Yes' to the proposal, reportedly was
close to tears when the musician slipped the diamond engagement ring into her
finger, and handed the car keys to her.
Peter, who didn't give Lola prior notice of his plan, visited her residence with the car and parked
it inside her compound. On the bonnet of the vehicle, he also dropped a rose flower and a love
card with the inscription, 'Please say Yes.'
This drama was followed by a long passionate kiss from the love birds. Minutes later, the
musician posted on his Instagram and Twitter handle saying, "It's about time," and shortly after,
he also posted that "she said yes."
He later updated his Blackberry status with "Officially, she's now Mrs. Okoye…" Speaking on why
he decided to propose to Lola, Peter said: "it is something I had always wanted to do and I knew
I would definitely do this to Lola one day, but I needed to wait for the right time. Honestly, she
deserves even more from me." he said. On her own, Lola said, "it is a day the Lord has made.
I'm excited the way any woman in my shoes would." The romance between Peter and Lola
started many years ago, even before Peter became a celebrity. Their relationship is already
blessed with two kids; Cameron and Aliona Okoye. A Public Relations expert said that, Lola met
Peter while she was working with FKG2, an advertising company.

NOLLYWOOD NOW ACTING SOFT PORN!

About twenty years ago Nigerian movie industry otherwise known as Nollywood, kicked off
themes of witchcraft, ritualism and greed that dominated some of the early movies.
One of the common scenes in today's Nollywood movies;Tonto Dike in a soft porno movy
While today, the practice has shifted and lovers of the country's films are helplessly being
compelled to watch obscene movies which promotes immorality and cultures that are alien to us
as Africans.
Indeed, recent survey has shown that pornographic movies are increasingly taking over
Nollywood.
Ardent followers of the recent development in the industry would have noticed the disturbing
increase in the degree of nudity portrayed in some of the recent Nollywood flicks.
Regrettably, Nollywood actors have thrown caution to the wind as they now venture into hard
core pornographic roles.
The internet, and particularly YouTube, is not helping matters as it is one avenue frenquently
used by these desperate, and materialistic soft-pron producers to gain wide popularity for such
obscene movies.
Until recently, the production of soft-porn movies only thrives in Ghana. They were considered
bold enough to engage in sexually suggestive roles.
This, however, paved the way for the popularity of Ghollywood movies in the country, as
Nigerians, out of curiosity, patronized Ghanaian films just to see how far they were willing to go
with this obscenity.
But today, the story has changed. Nollywood practitioners who have been very conservative
when it comes to displaying sex and nudity on screen, are now leading the way with the
production of pornographic movies.
Some of the soft-porn movies that have flooded the Nigerian and African markets in the past few
years includes: The Benjamins, Greedy Sex, Room 027, Another Game of Men, Bold 5 Babes,
Bedroom Assassins, All My Ladies, My Pretty Angel, Take My Wife (Pretty Wild Things), Pool
Party and I slept with My Bosses Wife.
Interestingly, the production of gay movies are also on the increase. Last year, popular producer
Dickson Iroegbu, released a gay movie, "Law 58" where Kanyo starred.
O.Kanyo, who played the lead character, Clarion Chukwurah, Halima Abubakar, Ghanaian actor,
Kofi Adjorlolo, Mark Morris, Chibueze, and other Nollywood stars.
Also, gay movies like, Pregnant Hawkers, Sinful Act 1&2 and also a Yoruba movie, titled,
"Lesbian" were also released into the market.
Still on soft-porn movies, the most recent of these hardcore porn movies is "Destructive
Instincts", produced recently and starring Nigerian born American actress cum producer, Judith
Opara Mazagwu popularly known as Afro Candy.
In the movie, Afro Candy played the role of a seductive mistress, with a steamy sex scene where
a male actor was grappling her bare breasts and buttocks.
Her boldness and unrepentant attitude about her act was attested to when she took to her
facebook page asking for actors who could act nude roles and are interested in being a part of
her production to get in touch with her.
Shortly after the noise about Afrocandy and the lewd scenes, another soft-porn movie, "The
"Benjamins" surfaced with its trailer.
The movie produced by Charles Smooth X Edegbe and directed by Temple Chinedum is a high
class campus movie based on rap music and love.
According to some critics, the movie isn't worth releasing because, it was a sheer display of
obscenity and mediocrity.
However, it is on record that soft porn movies started flooding Nigerian movie markets about two
years ago, when controversial actress, Tonto Dike starred in "Strippers in Love", a soft-porn
movie produced by Divine Touch Productions.
Scenes from the movie showed Tonto kissing another female cast and x-rated scenes with
another actor.
She had earlier starred in "Dirty Secrets". Apparently, with these kinds of unholy movies
dominating the Nigerian movie space, questions are being asked today regarding the future of
Nollywood.
Many people are of the opinion that the current trend which must be discouraged remains a
degradation of values that we hold as Africans.
